Mr. Mario Cavazos

Funeral services for Mr. Mario Cavazos, 89, of Henderson, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at First Baptist Church with Dr. David Higgs officiating. Interment will follow at Rusk County Memorial Gardens under the direction of Crawford-A. Crim Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, at the funeral home. Mr. Cavazos passed from this life on Monday, September 4, 2023, at his residence in Henderson. He was born December 28, 1933, in San Antonio to the late Rev. Alfredo Cavazos and Flora (Cantu) Cavazos. Mr. Cavazos served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, after which he earned his Bachelors in Spanish to be followed several years later with a Masters in Spanish and a minor in secondary education. Mario devoted his career to teaching high school, dedicating almost 40 years to the profession, he taught Spanish and History in Clear Creek and Hitchcock ISD before spending the last 20 years of his career with West Rusk C.I.S.D., retiring in 1992. He was an active member of the Texas State Teachers Association, and active as both a member and in leadership roles in the Texas Retired Teachers Association and the Rusk County Retired Teachers Association. Mario was an active volunteer throughout his life, giving generously of his time and talents as a member of the Lions Club, a Spanish translator at the polls on election day, and through participation on mission trips to Central America and Mexico. He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church Henderson where he served as a Deacon and sang with several of the choirs at the church for many years. Mr. Cavazos was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and had a tremendous love for those around him. His life truly centered around his love for family and the Lord, serving steadfastly as a partner, provider, and role model. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son David A. Cavazos, sisters Gloria and AustreBerta, brothers, Alec, Arnaldo, Oliver, and Nelson, and his nephew Steven Cavazos. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Charlotte Cavazos of Henderson; daughter, Cathy Bryan May and husband Jim of Dallas; daughter-in-law, Diane Cavazos of Henderson; grandchildren, Rachel Kent and husband Robert and their children Dorothy and Madeleine of Dallas, Scott Bryan of Dallas, and Molly Alexander and husband David of Houston; Jessica Curran and children Brandon and Quintin, and Samantha Moore and children Alexis and Elijah of Henderson; nephews and nieces, Arnaldo Cavazos Jr. of Dallas, Deborah Safi of Houston, Linde Hecox and Al Caneer of Central Texas. Pallbearers will be Scott Bryan, Robert Kent, David Alexander, Jim Mayo, Allen King, Damon Bishop, and Tony Johnson. Honorary pallbearer will be Tony Wooster.
