Mrs. Geneva Smith Cheek

Early Tuesday morning, at approximately 2:00 a.m., at the age of 74 years old, Geneva Cheek went to be with our Lord. She passed away at Overton Healthcare under the care of a wonderful team of nurses and staff, along with Hospice care. Geneva was born in Lafayette, LA on February 17, 1950, to Lionel and Willie Mae Smith. On December 28, 1971, she married Dennis Cheek, who preceded her in death in 2002. They had two sons, Kenneth Paul Cheek, who preceded them in death in 1994, and their youngest son, Darrell Lee Cheek. Geneva spent many years working alongside her husband and sons in their mobile home business, where she worked hand in hand with the guys and just as hard as any of them. In 2004, she met Jim Marrs, and they lived a wonderful life together until his passing in 2019. Geneva was an avid quilter and donated many of her creations to nursing homes or to be raffled off at fundraisers, but most of them were gifts to family members and friends who will cherish them for generations to come. She was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, out of Jacksonville, Texas. Geneva was survived by her son, Darrell Cheek and wife Tracy of Overton, TX; stepson, Derick "Bubba" Cheek and wife Carmen of Ball, LA; mother, Willie Mae Smith of Arp, TX, formerly of Lafayette, LA; twin sister, Genevieve Chambers and husband Gary of Lafayette, LA; brothers, Lionel "LJ" Smith and wife Cathy of Rayne, LA, Edward "Butch" Smith and wife Theresa of Broussard, LA, Phillip Smith and wife Tammy of Arp, TX, Ronald Smith and wife Charlotte of Lafayette, LA; brother-in-law, Francis Comeaux of Kenner, LA; along with 19 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other family, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Dennis Cheek Sr.; son, Kenneth Cheek; stepsons, Hiram "Hidy" Cook, Dennis "Junior" Cheek Jr.; stepdaughters, Dennesa Gail Cheek, Deanna "Sissy" (Meador) Griffin; father, Lionel Smith Sr.; and her life partner Jim Marrs. Geneva was a blessing to all those who loved and knew her, she loved her family and friends and the times she could spend with them. In her later years, she found great joy in being able to live closer to, and spend more time with, her son and grandchildren.
