Charles Carey Henderson, M.D.

Charles Carey Henderson, M.D., the son of Sam and Lucy Lee Henderson, was born in Sulphur Springs, TX on February 17, 1921. He received his Bachelors Degree at Southern Methodist University and his MD from Southwestern Medical College of the University of Texas. He completed his Internship at the Naval Hopsital in San Diego. His medical residency work in general surgery included two years at M.D. Anderson in Houston and four years at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.As a medical officer in the Navy, he served six years active duty, including World War II, and retired from the Naval Reserve after twenty years, with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.Dr. Henderson practiced medicine in San Mateo and Auburn, CA before moving to Henderson, TX where he was a general surgeon at Henderson Memorial Hospital for ten years. After he retired from medical practice, he moved to Chicago to become the medical Director for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois for five years before returning to Henderson.While in Henderson, he was an active participant in the Texas Forest Stewardship Program and was an avid supporter, owner, and breeder of pure-bred Devon Cattle.Charles Henderson had many accomplishments during his lifetime, among which are: Diplomate, American Board of Surgery, Fellow, American College of Surgeons, Director of the Credit Bureau of San Mateo, CA, Damon Runyon Fellowship, and Certificate of Commendation from the U.S. Department of Justice.Dr. Henderson is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Ruth Bybee Henderson, his son and daughter-in-law Robert C. and Sandra J. Henderson, daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth R. and Richard C. Day, daughter and son-in-law Margaret S. and Terry Jones, son-in-law, William C. Gibson, nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Virginia A. Gibson.Funeral services will be held at Crawford-A. Crim Funeral Home on Monday, February 4, 2013 with Rev. Frank Lane officiating. Interment will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park under the direction of Crawford-A. Crim Funeral Home.He accepted the gift of salvation when he was twelve years old and served in churches in a number of positions.
