Mrs. Mary Jo Sledge

September 23, 1934 - June 30, 2019

On Sunday June 30, 2019, Mary Jo Sledge of Henderson, Texas, a loving wife, mother and step-mother passed peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones, as was her wish at the age of 84. Funeral services for Mrs. Sledge, 84, of Henderson, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2019, in the chapel at Crawford-A. Crim Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Shiloh Cemetery under the direction of Crawford-A. Crim Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2, at the funeral home. Mary Jo Sledge was born on Sunday, September 23, 1934 in Belton, Texas to Evelyne Berry and Joseph Tincup. Mary Jo graduated from Killeen High School in 1951 and attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos, TX. In 1952, she married Robert Gene Vick of Killeen, TX. Born of this union were four daughters, Mona Greenlee of Shelton, WA, Paula Simpson of Houston, TX, Carla Powell of San Marcos, TX, and Kayla Wheeler of Buffalo Gap, TX. In May 1974, Mary Jo married the love of her life and soulmate, Carl Wayne Sledge. They have celebrated 45 years of marriage. Mary Jo will be remembered as a pillar of her Church community, a faithful mission worker, a prayer warrior with a heart for service. Many of those she taught English as a Second Language remember her fondly to this day. Mary Jo had a contagious laugh, once heard, never forgotten, an eye for an antique bargain and a philosophy of "get the work done, so we can have fun!” She was an avid 42 & Skip Bo player, always willing to take on the challenge and fun of learning a new game. She loved exploring new places, reading for pleasure and education, sharing her knowledge of the Bible, and faith in God with others. Jesus is welcoming one of his most faithful servants home. Mary Jo is preceded in death by her mother Evelyne Berry, her father Joseph Tincup, her sister Nancy Arnold Carrier and son-in-law Paul Allison. Surviving Mary Jo is her husband Carl Sledge and their six daughters, Mona Greenlee and husband Michael Greenlee, Paula Simpson and husband George Simpson, Carla Powell and husband Robert Powell, Kayla Wheeler and husband Randy Wheeler, Carla Brinkley and husband David Brinkley and Susan Allison, as well as their seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving Mary Jo are her siblings Dorothy Ann Conder, William Tincup-Davenport, Nettie Jean Gibson and Mike Arnold. Pallbearers are Michael Greenlee, George Simpson, Robert Powell, Steven Bokemeyer, Joshua Prescott, and David Brinkley. Honorary pallbearers are John Davenport, Joel Davenport, Jeffrey Tincup, Dennis Conder, Alan McJunkins, and Kyle Niehaus. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shiloh Cemetery Association at 11336 FM 840 East, Mt. Enterprise, TX 75681. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.crawfordacrim.com.
