March 20, 1927 - December 28, 2018
Bobbie Hargis Todd, 91, of Henderson joined her Lord and Savior in Heaven on December 28, 2018. She was born on March 20, 1927 in Chireno, Nacogdoches County, Texas. The sixth and youngest child of John Arlington Hargis and Vera Mae Booth Hargis, Bobbie was only eighteen months old when her father, a Nacogdoches County Deputy Sheriff, was killed in the line of duty. After graduating from Nacogdoches High School in 1945, Bobbie entered Stephen F. Austin. At SFA, she was a cheerleader for the Lumberjacks and a member of the Fideles Social Club. During her freshman year, Bobbie began dating WWII veteran, Joe “Orville” Todd. Bobbie and Orville were married on February 22, 1948 in the First Christian Church of Nacogdoches. Bobbie worked at the Rusk County Court House for several years. After the birth of their first two children, she returned to SFA and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education in 1957. Bobbie taught two years at Montgomery Elementary School before transferring to the newly built Chamberlain Elementary School. She greatly influenced young lives, teaching in the Henderson Independent School District for 23 years and is remembered by a great many students as their favorite teacher. Bobbie joined Millville Baptist Church after marrying Orville where she served as Sunday School teacher, church treasurer, and on almost every church committee. She occasionally filled in as pianist and enjoyed hosting church events in their home. Orville and Bobbie worshipped and served at the small rural church until it discontinued services. Their strong faith in God supported them through the toughest challenge of their lives, the accidental death of their oldest child, Joe Clayton Todd, at age five in 1957. Early in her marriage, Bobbie realized that to spend time with Orville, she needed to learn to hunt. She became an avid hunter and fisherman, even surpassing Orville’s enthusiasm for these activities. Accompanying Orville on many hunting trips, she was welcomed by the other men because she was one of the best shots and by far the best cook! She was a great sports fan and enjoyed watching and talking about everything from basketball to baseball to golf. But by far, her favorite sport was football. More than anything, Bobbie loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She found great joy in them, and was a source of strength for the entire family. Celebrating family birthdays was a favorite occasion for her, and the birthday girl or boy always received their favorite pie. Baking pies was her specialty! Bobbie was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Henderson Women’s Forum, and the Nacogdoches Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. Greeting Bobbie in Heaven are her husband of 70 years, Joe Orville Todd, son Joe Clayton Todd, parents John and Vera Hargis, and siblings Ruth Elder, Booth “Sambo” Hargis, Margarete Shock, Stella Teague, and John “Shotgun” Hargis, Jr. Celebrating Bobbie’s 91 years of life are her son and daughter-in-law Richard and Debbie Todd of Henderson, daughter and son-in-law Bobbie Ann and Ron Anderson of Nacogdoches, grandchildren Meredith Todd of Longview, Morgan and Michael Loosier of Henderson, Mallory and Jon Terry of Lindale, Paul and Sara Smith of Nacogdoches, Leigh and Patrick Middleton of San Antonio, and Mark Anderson of California, great-grandchildren Brayden, Cannon, Audrey, Abbey, Paisley, Kennedy, and Clate, along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. A Memorial service will be held Thursday, January 3rd, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at Millville Baptist Church, northeast of Henderson, Texas, on FM 782, officiated by Dr. Bruce Tankersley and Rev. Bill Kuykendall. Bobbie’s family invites you to remain inside the church after the service for a time of fellowship.
