Mrs. Sallie Nye Burns

Mrs. Sallie Nye Burns was welcomed into Heaven by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at the age of 80. Sallie was born on July 5, 1943 to John Fritz Nye and John Dan “Johnnie” Nye. She lived most of her life in Rusk County, attended school at Gaston High in Joinerville and was a graduate of the Class of 1962. It was there she met the love of her life, Joe Edward Burns. They were married in 1964 and were we blessed with three children. They lived in Lufkin and Houston where they made life long friends. They eventually made their way to Henderson where they settled to raise their family. Sallie worked for 32 years for Henderson High School doing what she did best - serving others. It was there that she became affectionately known as “Momma Burns” - a name that would stick with her for years among family and friends. Once she was blessed with Grandchildren, they became the apple of her eye and from then on she was known as “Granny.” She was an avid baker and enjoyed cooking and spending time with family. She was known for her southern meals and her homemade cat-head biscuits. Making “Cookies with Granny” during the holidays was a cherished tradition, as well as teaching her grandchildren how to make her legendary buttermilk and chocolate pies. Throughout her life her love for the Lord showed in all she did. She had a servant’s heart and a true gift of caring for others. She always found a place in her heart and home for family and friends who needed a hot meal, place to stay, or firm “come to Jesus” talking to. She was a faithful Christian and long time member of Southside Baptist Church. Sallie is preceded in death by her late husband of fifty-seven years, Joe Edward Burns, as well as her sister Marilyn Brown, and brothers George Nye, Billy Nye and Mike Nye. She is survived by her children: sons and daughters-in-law Larry and Teresa Burns of Timpson; Frank and Jo Nan Burns of Forney; and her daughter and son-in-law Monica and Charles “Bubba” Reynolds of Henderson. Her beloved grandchildren: Elizabeth and Connor Iles of Timpson; Allison and Brandon Goodwin of Sachse; Halle Burns of Timpson; Lucy and Cole Fanselow of Dallas; Graham Burns of Forney; Jessica and Caleb Camp of Crosby; Nathan Tovar and Brittney Foster of Henderson; CJ Reynolds of Henderson; and Katie and Austin Gossman of Rosenberg. Her precious great grandchildren: Jase and Selah Iles, Reuben and Sophie Camp, and Stella Tovar. She is also survived by her brother, John Paul Nye of Mount Enterprise, sister Carolyn Smylie of Henderson and many nieces and nephews, as well as many other “adopted family members” she held near and dear. The Celebration of Life service will be held at Southside Baptist Church on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at 1:00 p.m., with Rev. Blake Dover and Rev. Mike Ledbetter officiating.
