Mr. George P. Bristow

George Paul Bristow passed away peacefully at his home on October 2, 2015 in Henderson, Texas, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. His passing comes twenty-eight days prior to his ninetieth birthday. George was born in Houston, Texas, on October 30, 1925 to Robert and Mamie Bristow and was raised in Houston where he attended Stephen F. Austin High School. At the age of seventeen, George enlisted in the United States Navy in response to the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. Stationed on the USS New Mexico (BB-40) as a seaman first class, George participated in the invasions of Saipan, the Marianas, Tanna, Guam, Okinawa and the Philippines. For his service, the Navy awarded him the Purple Heart, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal, and the American Campaign Medal. After returning from war, George met and married Ouida Burk Bristow in Houston, Texas. They remained married for 68 years until his death. In 1959, the couple moved to Henderson where they owned and operated Lone Star Paint Company until retiring in 1992. George attended First Baptist Church and was a member of the Shriners. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, watching Longhorn football and Texas Rangers baseball, and driving his tractor. George will be remembered as a man of faith, for his devotion to his wife, and for his spirit of sacrifice for his family. George is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mamie Bristow and his brother, Clayton Robert Bristow. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Ouida Burk Bristow; two children Larry George Bristow and Denise Bristow Wilhite; three grandchildren, Kimberly Wilhite Orr married to Ryan Orr, Ashley Bristow Boone married to Kevin Boone, and Adam Wilhite married to Elizabeth Wilhite; four great grandchildren, Brennan Bristow Orr, Austin David Orr, Ashton Layne Boone and Beckham Robert Boone; sister, Florence Stevenson and husband Don of Liberty Hills, Texas; extended family member, Cindy Westmoreland. A Celebration of George’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 5, 2015 at First Baptist Church, with Dr. David Higgs and Brother O'Brien Satcher officiating. The burial will be private. The family will receive friends at the church in the Family Life Center following the services.
