Mrs. Cloe York

Cloe Annette Johnson York, aged 92, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday April 12th, 2026. She was a devout Christian who served the Lord for many decades as a Sunday School teacher and member of the choir at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member from the 1950’s until her passing. She was born in Seminole, Oklahoma, February 2nd, 1934 to Gid Robert and LaVeta Alice Johnson. She was one of 8 children. She moved to Overton at a very early age and resided in the Overton area for most of her life. She graduated from New London High School. In February of 1951 she married the love of her life, Douglas Stephen York, who preceded her in death. They bought a farm and moved to the Pleasant Hill community in 1956, where they lived out the remainder of their lives. They had been married for 73 years when Doug passed away October 28th, 2024. Cloe was an avid gardener; she loved growing vegetables and preserving them. She loved growing plants and flowers, her home and yard were full of flowering plants, she had a green thumb beyond belief. Ask anyone who had put their feet under her table and they will tell you she was really a fantastic cook. It was one of her many talents and something she absolutely loved doing. She could cook and bake at a professional level. One year for fun, she even took a cake decorating class at Kilgore College. We all enjoyed that course! Another hobby that Cloe loved, and was very talented at, was sewing and quilting. Over the years she made and gifted many quilts to those she loved. She was a traditionalist, her quilts were hand pieced and hand quilted, NO machine quilting for this lady she would say! She showed her quilts at the Rusk County quilt show many times. Cloe took a break from working outside the home when she and Doug started a family. She was a stay at home Mom until the kids were in school and then she reentered the workforce. During her career she did many things, before children she was a switchboard operator for the phone company! After she went back to work she was the Camp Fire Girls Director of Rusk County, she did accounting work/book keeping for Dr. Wilkerson, Pritchard and Abbott, and KAM well service. For many years she was the secretary for the County Judge of Rusk County James Porter. She finished her career with Fiberglass Specialties as a sales rep. She had great organizational and people skills, she made many dear friends through the years. She was truly loved by her family. She put family first and foremost all of her life. She is survived by 3 children Jan York Elder and her husband Dr. Jack Elder, Glenn Stephen York and his wife Patricia York, Gregory Dwayne York and his wife Tammy York; 7 grandchildren Kellie Elder Tyson, Ginger Elder Cannon, Kristin Elder, Angie York Dean, Daniel York, Jesse York, and Jordan York; 11 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Graveside services for Mrs. Cloe York will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery with Rev. Dean Grigsby officiating.
