Mrs. Sara Kyger McClelland

Sara Eugenia Kyger McClelland completed her long and blessed earthly journey and entered the Gates of Heaven on June 27, 2017, after a brief illness in Henderson, Texas. Born April 15, 1922, in Beaumont, Texas to Bryan Halbert Kyger and Sara Lucretia Youngblood Kyger. She was the second child of four children and the only daughter. Sara graduated from Henderson High School in 1939. She continued her education at Baylor University, studying with graduating in 1943 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. After graduation, Sara taught at Henderson High School. During the summer of 1944, she answered the national call for teachers to work that summer in Washington, D.C. as secretarial staff for the War Department. On October 20, 1946, Sara married George Dewey McClelland in Henderson, Texas, after George returned from serving in the US Army, Pacific Theater during World War II. George and Sara’s 71-year marriage was a guiding light to all who knew this loving couple and most of all to their children and grandchildren. George and Sara lived for a number of years in the Baton Rouge area while George worked for Dow Chemical’s Louisiana Division. Their four children graduated from Lee High School. They were active members of the First Baptist Church of Port Allen and later Southside Baptist Church. Sara taught English at Park Forest Middle School for fifteen years, retiring in 1982. George and Sara traveled to Europe and the United States together, and accomplished many great projects, including the 911 mapping and addressing of Rusk County and Harrison County in the 1990s. Mother was a woman of great Christian faith, who taught Girls’ Auxiliary, Vacation Bible School, and many Sunday School classes, especially for young married women. Sara is survived by her loving family: Husband, George Dewey McClelland, Sr. of Henderson and children, Ann McClelland Bishop (Jerry Zamzow) of Houston; Mary Kay Kindhauser-McClelland (Georges Kindhauser) of Geneva, Switzerland; Patricia Lynn McClelland (Larry Joe Williams) of Dallas; and George McClelland, MD (Patricia Laird McClelland) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Sara and George have eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: James Douglas Bishop (Katherine Reichardt Bishop) of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; Margaux Eileen Kindhauser of Geneva, Switzerland; Katherine Lynn Williams and Marie Claire Williams, of Dallas; Ashley Marie McClelland Gallifant (Caleb Scott Gallifant) of Louisville, Kentucky; Sara Katherine McClelland David (Blake Anthony David), Joseph Bryan McClelland, and Benjamin George McClelland of Baton Rouge. Great grandchildren include Benjamin William Bishop and Jason Douglas Bishop; and William Scott Gallifant and Julia Katherine Gallifant. Sara is also survived by her sister-in-law Carol Lynn Wheatley McClelland, brother-in-law, Robert McClelland (Shirley McClelland) of Montgomery, Texas, and many loving nieces and nephews and their extended families, whom she cherished greatly. Special thanks are expressed to Michele Spaulding, Sara’s loving and competent caregiver. Sara is preceded in death by her parents, Bryan and Lucretia Kyger, and her brothers Bryan Halbert Kyger, Jr. (LaNelle), William Morris Kyger (Rachel), and James Fremont Kyger (JoNan). She was also preceded in death by her niece Karen Kyger. She was preceded in death by her sister-in-law Faye McClelland and brother-in-law James Patrick McClelland, MD. Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2017, at 10:00 am followed by services at 11:00 am at Crawford A. Crim Funeral Home Chapel, 1414 S. Main Street, Henderson, Texas, with Dr. David Higgs officiating. Burial to follow at Lakewood Cemetery. Pallbearers are members of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made towards the George D. and Sara Kyger McClelland Endowed Premedical Scholarship Fund.
